WhatsApp Adds In-App Message Translation to Bridge Language Barriers
WhatsApp has introduced a new message translation feature for both iOS and Android, allowing users to convert texts into their preferred language without leaving their chat. As of now, the translation option is available in individual chats, group conversations, and Channel updates.
Users can translate a message by long-pressing it and selecting “Translate.” They may choose both the source and destination languages, and once downloaded, the language packs are retained for future use. On Android, there is an extra convenience: users can enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread so that all subsequent messages are translated.
Meta states that all translations are performed on the user’s device, ensuring WhatsApp does not see the content of what is translated. This preserves end-to-end encryption and maintains user privacy. At launch, language support differs between platforms. Android users initially obtain translations across six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.iPhone users gain access to more than 19 languages from the start, encompassing a broader global coverage.
This update positions WhatsApp closer to other messaging platforms that already support in-conversation translation. While not real-time voice translation, the feature potentially streamlines cross-lingual chats – a useful capability for more than 3 billion users across 180+ countries.
The rollout will be gradual, and Meta has not yet confirmed when translation support will be extended to WhatsApp’s web, desktop, or Mac apps.
