X Tests Paid “Boost” Feature for Post Reach Among Premium Users

X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new paid feature that allows users to pay for extra reach on individual posts, marking another attempt by the platform to diversify its revenue streams.

The option, currently in testing, adds a “Boost” button beneath posts for Premium subscribers on iOS. Tapping the button offers a tiered menu of reach packages, ranging from $50 for an estimated 11,000–27,000 impressions to $1,000 for 225,000–543,000 impressions, according to screenshots shared by early users.

Unlike traditional ads, these boosts simply amplify the visibility of a post within the feed, rather than targeting specific audiences through ad tools. That distinction may limit their appeal, as marketers and businesses typically rely on detailed audience targeting. At the same time, individual creators or brands looking for quick visibility might find value in the straightforward pricing model.

The feature is only available to X Premium subscribers at this stage, raising questions about how many users will be willing to pay on top of their existing subscription fees. Premium already offers perks such as increased reach for replies, longer posts, and fewer ads.

Critics have noted that the high cost may restrict uptake, while also opening the door for misuse. Spammers and scammers could view the boosts as a shortcut to visibility, though the price points may deter casual abuse. Still, the feature underscores X’s push to experiment with monetization at a time when advertising revenues remain volatile.

According to internal data shared by the company, about 80% of X’s user base does not post or actively engage on the platform, suggesting the market for paid post boosts will be relatively small. Even so, the test reflects X’s broader strategy under Elon Musk to increase subscription-based revenue and reduce reliance on advertising, following steep declines in ad spend since the platform’s rebrand.
