Threads Expands Direct Messaging With New Request Feature

Meta’s text-based platform Threads is rolling out an update that broadens how users can connect privately, allowing anyone on the app to send message requests regardless of whether they follow each other.

The change marks a shift from Threads’ initial approach to direct messaging. When DMs launched in July, the feature was restricted to conversations between a user’s Threads followers or mutual Instagram followers over the age of 18. Now, a new option within settings enables message requests from all users, with incoming requests routed to a dedicated inbox.

The company confirmed the rollout is underway for all users who have DMs activated. According to screenshots shared by early testers, a pop-up notification within the app introduces the feature and guides users through the new controls.

The update reflects broader social media trends. Across platforms, users are increasingly favoring private messaging over public posting, shifting much of the interaction away from main feeds and into one-to-one or small group exchanges. By opening its DM system, Threads positions itself more directly within this behavioral shift, giving users another channel for connection and discovery.

There are potential downsides, including the risk of increased spam or unwanted contact. Meta has acknowledged this and points to existing safeguards: users retain control over their message settings and can block or restrict accounts that attempt to contact them.
