Threads Narrows Gap with X in Daily Users, New Data Shows

Recent data from Similarweb hints that Instagram Threads is rapidly closing the gap with X in daily mobile app usage. In June 2025, Threads recorded approximately 115 million daily active users across iOS and Android devices, marking a significant year-over-year growth of nearly 128%. In contrast, X maintained a lead with 132 million daily mobile users but experienced a 15% decline compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, Bluesky, the decentralized social platform, showed remarkable growth of over 370% year-over-year on mobile but still maintains a much smaller user base, with around 4.1 million daily active users globally. Despite this, Bluesky boasts over 37 million registered accounts, indicating a large number of inactive or casual users.

Bluesky’s initial user boost last year followed the U.S. presidential election, as some users migrated from X due to its association with Elon Musk and political controversies. However, the platform has faced criticism for fostering a predominantly left-leaning user base, potentially driving some users toward Threads.

The competition between Threads and X is primarily centered on mobile usage, where Threads has gained momentum. On desktop web platforms, X still dominates with approximately 146 million daily visits globally, dwarfing Threads’ 7 million visits. Bluesky’s web traffic sits between the two, suggesting users often browse without engaging deeply.

In the U.S., the landscape differs slightly: Bluesky attracts more daily web visits than Threads, but X maintains a strong lead across both web and mobile channels. On mobile, Threads counts 15 million U.S. users compared to X’s 23 million.
