TikTok Hits 30 Million UK Users, Gains Another Ban Extension
TikTok has released new figures confirming that it now serves over 30 million users in the United Kingdom – making it the platform’s largest user base in Europe. Alongside this milestone, TikTok reports that its UK presence includes over 1.5 million British businesses and contributes £1.6 billion (approximately $2.17 billion USD) annually to the UK economy. The company also stated that it employs around 3,000 staff in the country.
TikTok described the announcement as a reflection of its long-term investment in the UK, which has been the home of its European operations since 2018. In a statement, the company said, “TikTok has had a deep commitment to the U.K. since our launch here in 2018. Our European operations are financially incorporated here, and TikTok U.K. is our European operating company.”
The timing of these figures is significant. TikTok continues to face scrutiny over data privacy and potential influence from the Chinese government. Although the UK has not implemented a full ban like the one pursued in the United States, the app remains prohibited on government-issued devices and remains under close watch by regulators.
The platform’s new disclosures appear designed to underline its economic and business value as a preemptive move against possible future restrictions. In the U.S., similar efforts to emphasize TikTok’s contributions have not deterred lawmakers, who have passed legislation mandating a sale of TikTok’s American operations or face a ban. The latest extension of that deadline, expected from President Trump, pushes enforcement to September – a far cry from its original intended ban in January after multiple similar extensions.
