Threads Sees Continued Growth with 23M Downloads in May

Meta’s Threads app maintained its upward momentum in May, recording 23 million downloads across iOS and Android platforms, according to new figures from AppFigures. That places it eighth in overall global app downloads for the month – matching its March figures and slightly up from April’s total.

With this consistent growth, Threads now boasts 350 million monthly active users as per Meta’s last earnings call. While still trailing X, which reported 600 million monthly users in March, Threads is closing the gap as it carves out a role in real-time digital conversation. Notably, Threads is increasingly emphasizing news and live event content, especially in areas like sports, where it aims to attract audiences seeking up-to-the-minute engagement.

The broader download rankings also highlight continued strength among Meta’s other platforms. TikTok and Instagram remain firmly in the top three alongside ChatGPT, which has held the top spot throughout 2025. Facebook and WhatsApp retained their positions in the top ten, while Snapchat held on as well, though its long-term growth faces more uncertainty.

Snapchat continues to be widely used by younger audiences but has struggled to maintain engagement as its users age. Despite healthy download numbers, the app reports lower user retention compared to competitors, with 900 million monthly and 460 million daily active users – figures that lag behind Meta’s flagship apps and TikTok, all of which have crossed the billion-user threshold. Threads’ rising user base suggests it may be building a more durable audience by evolving its feature set and competing directly with X’s core functionality.
