Snap Map Hits 400 Million Monthly Users as Location-Based Features Expand
Snapchat’s location-based feature Snap Map has reached a major milestone, with the company announcing it now serves over 400 million monthly active users.
Originally launched in 2017 as a way for users to share their real-time location with friends and view public Snaps globally, Snap Map has evolved into a broader social discovery tool. Today, it helps users find popular spots, events, and points of interest in their area, making it one of the platform’s key features.
“Snap Map is one of the most used mobile maps in the world, and we’re thrilled to see our community continue to grow,” said Ceci Mourkogiannis, VP of Product at Snap. “The Snap Map is helping hundreds of millions connect with friends and their favorite places and discover what’s happening around them, making the world feel more connected every day.”
Snapchat has gradually added more capabilities to Snap Map, including the “Footsteps” feature, which allows users to track the locations they’ve visited. Another addition, “Promoted Places,” enables businesses to advertise directly within the map, providing visibility to nearby users.
The platform’s growing influence in location-based interaction also appears to be prompting competition. Instagram is reportedly developing its own real-time location feature, dubbed “Friend Map,” in an effort to match Snap’s capabilities.
