OpenAI is Reportedly Developing an AI Social Network
OpenAI is exploring the development of its own social media platform, according to sources familiar with the project as reported by The Verge. The effort, still in its early stages, appears to revolve around a social feed tied to image generation within ChatGPT, with an internal prototype already in testing.
While it remains uncertain whether the product will launch as a standalone app or be integrated directly into ChatGPT – which recently became the most downloaded app worldwide – the move signals a potential shift for OpenAI into territory currently dominated by X (formerly Twitter) and Meta. Given that many social platforms have released their own indepedent AIs, this could be a reversal of that trend, with OpenAI aiming to build a social platform around AI for maximum functionality and AI response quality.
CEO Sam Altman has reportedly been seeking feedback from external parties about the initiative, though the company has yet to comment publicly. If launched, a social platform would intensify Altman’s rivalry with Elon Musk, who earlier this year made an unsolicited $97.4 billion offer to acquire OpenAI. Altman’s retort – “no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want” – made it very clear that the two platforms are not likely to be cooperating any time soon.
According to insiders, part of OpenAI’s vision is for AI to assist users in generating more engaging content, a concept inspired by how Musk’s Grok is used on X. Whether OpenAI will fully pursue this social venture remains to be seen, but its presence within the organization indicates a broader push toward diversification beyond pure AI development , and could lead to another major player in the social media space if the platform itself ends up being a high-quality online social space.
