Trump Grants 75-Day Extension on TikTok Ban Amid Deal Negotiations

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order extending the deadline for TikTok’s U.S. operations to remain active by an additional 75 days, just one day before a nationwide ban was set to take effect. The extension is intended to allow more time for a deal to be finalized between ByteDance and potential U.S. buyers.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days.” He also emphasized progress made in ongoing negotiations and his administration’s intent to prevent the platform from “going dark.”

This is the second time the ban deadline has been pushed back. The original requirement for ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. assets was set for January 19 under legislation signed by former President Joe Biden. Trump granted the first 75-day reprieve on his first day back in office.

The extension follows a brief disruption in service, during which TikTok was removed from U.S. app stores before being reinstated. According to Bloomberg, the president recently reviewed a bid from a consortium of U.S. investors, including Oracle, Blackstone, and Andreessen Horowitz — a group considered a leading candidate in the sale process. Other interested buyers reportedly include Amazon, Walmart, and Frank McCourt’s Project Liberty.

This extension means that the app will continue to operate for another couple of months regardless of what happens, with another extension potentially on offer if a deal still can’t be locked down. However, given the amount of interest that several companies have in purchasing the platform, it’s not clear exactly what its future will look like.
