Facebook Expands Monetization to Stories for Creators
Facebook is introducing a new way for creators to earn money by monetizing public stories, expanding its existing content monetization program. The feature is now available globally to eligible creators who are already part of Facebook’s monetization initiative.
This update allows creators to generate revenue from content they are already producing, such as short-form videos, reels, or personal updates, simply by sharing them as public stories. Unlike other monetization features, this program does not require creators to reach a specific view threshold before they can start earning. Instead, payouts are determined by the performance of their content.
The expansion is part of Facebook’s broader push to attract more content creators, particularly as competition with platforms like TikTok continues. Meta has been actively encouraging creators to use Facebook and Instagram by offering financial incentives, content deals, and additional support to help grow their audiences. Last year, Facebook reported that creators earned over $2 billion on the platform, with revenue from Reels and other short-form videos increasing by more than 80%.
The new story monetization feature builds on Facebook’s existing Content Monetization program, which was launched last year. This program consolidated several previous initiatives, including in-stream ads, ads on Reels, and performance-based bonuses. After testing story monetization with a select group of beta users, Facebook is now rolling it out more broadly.
Millions of creators were invited to join the program in 2024, and Facebook has indicated plans to open enrollment to more users later this year. Creators who are not yet part of the program can register their interest on Facebook’s monetization platform. Enrolment is apparently meant to open some time later this year, which could eveually lead into the system becoming widely accessible to any user.
