X Suffers Major Cyberattack, Leading to Widespread Outages
Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced multiple outages on March 10, 2025 and onwards, with CEO Elon Musk attributing the disruptions to a “massive cyberattack”. The attack led to widespread service failures throughout the day, frustrating users in both the U.S. and the U.K.
The first major disruption was reported around 10 a.m. ET, with users unable to access X through the website or mobile app. Although service was restored shortly after, the platform went down three more times, with the longest outage occurring in the afternoon. According to outage tracking site Downdetector, reports of disruptions peaked at nearly 36,000 in the U.S. before gradually declining.
Musk later addressed the situation, stating, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X… This was done with a lot of resources.” While he suggested that a large, coordinated group or possibly a nation-state could be involved, no specific entity was named. Some cybersecurity experts speculated that the attack was a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, in which a flood of internet traffic overwhelms a server.
The prolonged downtime has led some users to explore alternative platforms, with competitors like Bluesky rolling out new features at an opportune moment – namely, updates to their video features and message functionality, two features that are often seen as major parts of X compared to smaller platforms. While the full extent of the attack remains unclear, X appears to have largely recovered, though concerns about security and platform stability persist.
