EU Investigates Elon Musk’s X for Moderation Violations and Political Interference
Elon Musk’s ownership of X (formerly Twitter) is under renewed scrutiny in Europe, with EU officials investigating potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The EU Commission’s investigation, initiated shortly after Musk acquired the platform in 2023, is reportedly advancing rapidly, with findings expected to be presented soon.
The inquiry centers on Musk’s approach to content moderation, which emphasizes “freedom of speech, not reach” as part of its enforcement philosophy, and whether it permits the spread of harmful content and misinformation. Under the DSA, platforms must adhere to strict content moderation rules, particularly concerning misinformation and harmful content.
In addition to platform policies, Musk’s personal engagement in European politics has prompted further scrutiny. Musk has openly endorsed the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, a controversial far-right group, and has made strong political statements about EU leadership and policies. This involvement has led to allegations that Musk may be using X to amplify content that aligns with his political preferences, potentially influencing democratic processes – EU officials are monitoring whether X’s algorithms are being manipulated to favor specific candidates or parties, which would violate DSA provisions requiring political neutrality.
In response to the EU investigation, X CEO Linda Yaccarino labeled the actions as “clear, unlawful retaliation for allowing an open discussion for all to hear.” This is not the first time Musk’s actions have raised alarms – his support for Donald Trump during the U.S. presidential election drew similar accusations of algorithmic bias to favor certain candidates, due to the amount of influence that X has over users from all walks of poltiical life.
The EU Commission has a strong track record of enforcing its regulations, and X could face significant penalties if found in violation of the DSA. As Musk continues to assert his influence through X, clashes with governments and regulatory bodies seem inevitable. More importantly, the outcome of these investigations could set critical precedents for the regulation of social media platforms and the accountability of influential tech leaders in shaping political discourse – it all depends on the outcome of these investigations.
