Threads Hits 300 Million Users as Growth Accelerates

Threads, Meta’s text-based social platform and alternative to X (formerly Twitter), has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 300 million monthly active users. Instagram and Threads chief Adam Mosseri confirmed the platform’s rapid growth, with over 200 million users added in the past year alone.

This marks a notable acceleration for Threads. After taking 10 months to grow from 100 million to 200 million users, the platform added its latest 100 million users in less than half that time. Meta attributes this momentum to the compounding effect of user engagement: as more users join and contribute to conversations, others are drawn in, expanding the platform’s reach.

While Threads is still behind X, which reports 570 million monthly active users, its current trajectory suggests it could close the gap significantly in 2025. Threads’ daily active user count now sits at 100 million, though its daily-to-monthly active ratio of 33% indicates that engagement remains an area for improvement compared to X’s 44%.

Challenges remain for Threads in certain key areas, particularly around real-time, news-driven content. Threads’ cautious approach to political content has limited its appeal for users seeking immediate updates, such as coverage of the U.S. election. Meanwhile, competing platforms like Bluesky have siphoned off some of Threads’ potential audience, further highlighting the need to refine user retention strategies.

If its current momentum holds, Threads could emerge as a dominant force in the social media landscape, potentially surpassing X in active user numbers later in 2025. This all hinges on how many users actually choose Threads as their alternative, however, with many instead turning to platforms like Bluesky as their main choice.
