Queer Community App Cherry Social Sees Prototype Test

A new app called Cherry Social is set to see a limited test run this week. Founded by Philadelphia-based entrepreneur Sophia Schiaroli, the platform aims to provide a safe and inclusive digital space for people in the LGBTQ+ community – with a core focus on women, trans people and nonbinary people. This was primarily a response to how many queer spaces are biased towards men.

The app’s origins trace back to 2021, when Schiaroli began organizing “Gay Girl Walks” in Philadelphia to connect with other queer individuals. The grassroots events quickly grew into a larger community, drawing thousands of participants to meetups, yoga sessions, and social outings under the name “Philly Gay Girls Plus.” While social media hubs like Instagram and Geneva served as early organizing tools, the rapid growth of the group highlighted the need for a dedicated platform.

Cherry Social is designed to fill that gap. Unlike traditional social platforms or dating apps, it emphasizes building community through localized events and interest-based connections. Users will be able to discover nearby gatherings, connect with like-minded individuals, and foster meaningful relationships—all within a safe and curated environment.

The app has already gained significant traction, launching a Kickstarter campaign in November to fund its development. A prototype will begin testing this week with a small group of seleected users, with plans for a full launch in 2025. With more and more users seeking social platforms that accomodate thier needs properly, Cherry Social may end up being a successful example of a niche platform that suits an under-served community.
