Bluesky Expands Verification and Moderation to Rival X
Bluesky, the social media platform launched by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is stepping up its efforts to verify user accounts and improve content moderation as its user base continues to grow. The platform has announced several new measures aimed at combating impersonation and harmful content, while also providing more robust identity verification tools meant to rival those of X and other similar platforms.
Bluesky has revealed that it is working closely with organizations and prominent individuals to verify accounts, ensuring authenticity on the platform. The company also emphasized a strict stance against “domain squatting” and fake profiles, stating that such accounts will be removed. Parody and satire, however, are welcome, provided they are clearly labeled to avoid confusion.
To handle the influx of new users and reports, Bluesky has significantly expanded its moderation team, quadrupling its size. This move aims to address existing backlogs and improve the platform’s ability to act swiftly against violations. Bluesky’s user base has been growing rapidly, fueled in part by dissatisfaction with X over issues like misinformation and hate speech. Many users are either migrating entirely or maintaining accounts on both platforms.
In response to user feedback, the platform is exploring additional ways to verify identities beyond its current domain verification system. Bluesky teased that new solutions will be announced soon, as it seeks to balance openness with safety and authenticity. The platform wants to have effective verification without making it a highly exclusive feature that could be misused or become unattainable to notable-but-not-famous figures who are likely to be impersonated.
