Threads Hits 35 Million Signup In November
Meta is making moves to highlight Threads’ growth amid increasing attention on rival platform Bluesky. According to recent reports, Meta announced that Threads gained 35 million new sign-ups in November, showing a recent uptick in registrations. This push comes as Bluesky has been steadily growing, sparking competition in the social media space – with both platforms effectively being seen as an “X alternative” to a certain subset of both their user base and the internet at large.
While Threads’ sign-up numbers are impressive, the distinction between sign-ups and active users remains key. Threads initially set a record for reaching 100 million sign-ups in July 2023, but active user engagement lagged behind, reaching that milestone months later. Currently, Threads reports 275 million monthly active users, a significant increase from the 175 million reported in July. With this growth rate of over 30 million monthly actives, Threads is holding strong against Bluesky’s 20 million active users.
Despite Threads’ larger user base, Meta appears to be responding directly to Bluesky’s rising popularity. Instagram and Threads head Adam Mosseri admitted that the rollout of new Threads features has been accelerated to stay competitive. Bluesky’s steady momentum is something Meta is watching closely, as rapid user growth could further boost its popularity.
Although Bluesky doesn’t yet rival Threads or platforms like X, which boasts 570 million active users, Meta’s proactive efforts underline the competitive pressure in the space. Meta’s strategy to replicate Bluesky’s features demonstrates its determination to maintain dominance – and perhaps concern that Bluesky has been seeing so many new users as a result of X’s changes, simply by being the right kind of platform at the right time.
