Decentralised Social Site WeAre8 Partners with Project Liberty
Emerging social media platform WeAre8 has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Project Liberty and the Frequency Network Foundation to redefine the digital landscape. This collaboration introduces blockchain technology to empower users, prioritizing data control, transparency, and economic fairness over profit-driven algorithms.
WeAre8, founded by Zoe Kalar, has positioned itself as “The People’s Platform,” striving to eliminate toxic content and algorithmic control. The integration with the Frequency blockchain, developed by the Frequency Network Foundation, enhances WeAre8’s mission by offering users complete ownership of their digital identities. This shift allows individuals to directly benefit financially from their content interactions.
US billionaire Frank McCourt, the founder of Project Liberty, emphasized the transformative nature of this partnership, describing it as a step toward a healthier and fairer internet. By combining forces, the three entities aim to give users control over their online experiences while supporting creators, charities, and environmental initiatives – the end goal being a platform where users are free to choose how they want to engage with social media in an ethical way, including ads being an opt-in feature.
One of WeAre8’s standout features is its unique approach to ad revenue. The platform redistributes 60% of its advertising income back to users, enabling them to support causes or cover personal expenses. Ads are separated from regular content feeds, allowing users to decide when and if they engage with advertisements. While this approach to social media is radically different from the norm, it might also be a major step forward among other independent social media sites – only some of which survive long enough to establish important partnerships like this.
