High Rate of Unsolicited Flirtation on LinkedIn Sparks Concerns
Some LinkedIn users are encountering unsolicited flirtatious messages on the professional networking platform, prompting concerns about the site’s evolving role in users’ lives. Although LinkedIn markets itself as a professional space, the rate of unsolicited flirting and sexual messages has increased in recent months – likely due to the burnout going on within the dating industry.
Several LinkedIn members shared experiences of unwanted advances, noting that these messages often create a “gross” and “unprofessional” environment. In response, some users have publicly called out inappropriate messages, while others have used LinkedIn’s blocking features to manage these interactions. In some instances, these messages are disguised as professional offers for jobs or correspondence, meaning that a filter won’t necessarily beat them directly.
This issue aligns with findings from a 2023 survey by Passport Photo Online, in which 91% of surveyed female LinkedIn users reported receiving romantic or inappropriate messages. Additionally, a recent study by DatingNews.com indicated that 52% of respondents have met potential romantic partners through LinkedIn or similar networking platforms, suggesting a shift in user expectations.
LinkedIn’s official stance remains firm on maintaining a professional community. A spokesperson emphasized that romantic or harassing behavior is prohibited, and highlighted recent safety features to warn users when messages may be inappropriate. However, Experts still suggest that LinkedIn could implement more proactive measures, such as AI-driven message filtering similar to protocols on dating apps and some other social platforms, to curb inappropriate messaging.
