TikTok Expands STEM Feed to All U.S. and U.K. Users

TikTok is broadening its educational focus by making its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) feed accessible to all users in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland. Initially launched for users under 18 in the U.S. in March 2023, and expanded to European audiences in April 2024, the platform is now extending the STEM feed to its entire user base in these regions. Another small tweak of the system is its audience – the STEM feed will now be available for all ages, rather than being restricted to under-18s.

The STEM feed aims to foster co-learning and inspire users to explore science-focused content, ranging from engineering discussions to programming tutorials. According to TikTok, the initiative has already garnered close to 200 million views on STEM-approved videos. Additionally, nearly one-third of teens in the U.S. and U.K. engage with the STEM feed weekly.

By making the feed available to a wider audience, TikTok hopes to increase interest in STEM careers and educational content. This move is part of TikTok’s broader strategy to balance its reputation, as the platform often faces criticism for being a source of distraction due to its addictive algorithms. By expanding access to the STEM feed and integrating local language support for science content, TikTok aims to both provide greater educational value on its platform and address concerns from critics and regulatory bodies.
