Bluesky Experiences 1.2m Surge in Users in Two Days

Bluesky has gained significant traction following changes to X’s (formerly Twitter) blocking policies, with the announcements from X causing many users to shift to the competitor platform overnight. Bluesky’s official account has reported gaining over 1.2 million new users in just two days, including half a million in a single day, with more likely to follow in the next few weeks/

While Bluesky’s total user base stands at 12 million, it remains far behind Meta’s Threads (200 million users) and X (500 million users). However, Bluesky has risen into the top five most downloaded apps on the U.S. App Store, also experiencing increased popularity in Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan. Given that Japan is X’s second-largest market, and that Bluesky was designed to emulate an earlier incarnation of Twitter, there’s a good chance that the platform’s growth won’t stop here.

With X’s declining user numbers in some regions and many other competitors – for example, Cohost – either struggling to grow or get any initial success, Bluesky may find an opportunity to further expand its user base and gain even more traction in a number of different social media markets.
