Meta’s Threads Addresses ‘Engagement Bait’ Issue on “For You” Feed
Meta’s Threads platform is tackling a growing issue with “engagement bait” posts that have inundated the app’s For You feed, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. These posts, designed to generate quick likes and comments, are often low-quality content that gets algorithmically promoted, leading to user complaints about spam-like content dominating their feeds.
Mosseri acknowledged the issue after a surge in user concerns and said the company is actively working to fix the problem. He noted that not all comments or replies hold value and emphasized that Threads aims to improve content quality by curbing the spread of engagement bait. The algorithmic nature of Threads’ For You feed has been a key factor in amplifying this type of content, pushing irrelevant or undesirable posts to users.
Launched as Meta’s alternative to X (formerly Twitter), Threads has rapidly developed new features and gained a large user base, but the rise of engagement bait content has become a significant issue. Despite the controversy, Threads continues to roll out features that allow users to customize their feed experience, including keyword filtering and control over who can interact with posts.
Mosseri assured users that the platform is evolving to provide a better social media experience, with a strong focus on maintaining content quality. Only time will tell if the issue can be resolved, and what benefits it would have on both the overall user experience and the resulting change in user satisfaction.
