Tiktok Ends Neogiations with Merlin Music Collective
TikTok has ended its re-licensing negotiations with Merlin, a global collective of independent music labels, citing concerns about streaming fraud. Instead of renewing a blanket deal, TikTok will pursue direct licensing agreements with individual Merlin members. Merlin, representing 15% of global recorded music consumption, acknowledged TikTok’s concerns but emphasized its proactive stance against fraudulent content.
TikTok’s decision stems from issues with manipulated versions of copyrighted songs uploaded by some Merlin members, primarily from regions like Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. A TikTok spokesperson highlighted the need for greater control over the quality and legitimacy of music on the platform, stating that direct deals will allow TikTok to manage content better and address copyright issues more efficiently.
Merlin, in a letter to its members, expressed disappointment, claiming TikTok “walked away before negotiations even began” and emphasizing that it has taken significant steps to combat streaming fraud. TikTok, however, reiterated its respect for the independent music community and confirmed its commitment to keeping music available by working directly with labels.
TikTok’s new approach could streamline content control, but it may disrupt Merlin’s members, who need to sign new agreements to maintain their music on the platform beyond October 31, 2024.
