TikTok Partners with WHO to Fight Health Misinformation
TikTok is strengthening its efforts to curb health misinformation by partnering with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Fides network. The initiative, aimed at boosting TikTok’s medical fact-checking, brings together over 800 healthcare professionals to provide reliable, evidence-based content on key health issues.
Fides creators from the U.S., UK, France, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil will share expert insights on TikTok, debunking health myths and offering factual information. This partnership comes at an opportune time, as misinformation about vaccines, diets, and supplements continues to spread across social media platforms – as well as many creators who do not disclose their paid promotions for unhealthy or risky products.
In support of this effort, TikTok is donating $3 million to WHO’s work in mental health advocacy, aiming to build an informed and empathetic online community. The hope is that this partnership will deter some of the more dangerous health trends being regularly shared around on the platform, especially among younger users who may be more willing to accept misinformation as fact.
