X Seeks Restoration in Brazil Following Supreme Court Dispute
X is preparing to file required documents with Brazil’s Supreme Court to restore its service, according to sources. The platform has been blocked in Brazil since late August following a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, linked to his investigation into “digital militias” accused of spreading hate speech.
X has faced legal complications, including the closure of its offices and the dismissal of its legal agent, which violated local regulations. However, the company recently appointed a new legal representative in Brazil and is now expected to submit official documentation to the court, with the aim of resuming service as early as next week.
In compliance with the court’s demands, X has also begun blocking accounts accused of disseminating false information and has paid an 18 million reais fine. The company is working to resolve its issues and operate in Brazil like other major tech firms.
Given that sites like BlueSky have seen massive user boosts due to Brazil’s ban on X, it’s obvious that reclaiming the right to operate within the country could make a big difference to X. The ban saw a number of competitor sites suddenly gain surges of users – both users from Brazil and other users who presumably wanted to remain in contact with Brazilian friends.
