Bluesky Adds Native Video Support with 25 Video Limit
Bluesky, the decentralized social network founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, has introduced a new feature allowing users to post videos up to 60 seconds long. This much-anticipated update positions Bluesky to directly compete with X, Threads, and a number of other similar platforms that already had their own native video support.
The video function comes with a daily upload cap – users can post up to 25 videos or 10GB per day – and videos will auto-play unless the user adjusts their settings. This makes it easier for creators to produce short-form video content similar to platforms like Instagram or TikTok, but also helps to bring Bluesky in line with its competitors after a recent influx of users (mostly due to the Brazilian ban on X).
Bluesky has also implemented several safety features to prevent abuse. To upload videos, users must first verify their email addresses. All videos are scanned by Hive and Thorn, tools designed to flag inappropriate content or content requiring a warning. Videos that violate Bluesky’s community guidelines are subject to moderation, with repeat offenders potentially losing the ability to upload videos.
This video feature rollout reflects Bluesky’s growing ambitions in the social networking space. Initially invite-only, Bluesky opened to the public in early 2024 and continues to build its user base by introducing features that bring it closer to established competitors.
