X Rolls Out Message Editing Feature
X has recently introduced a feature allowing users to edit direct messages (DMs) on iOS devices. This update, which began rolling out over the weekend, brings X’s messaging capabilities more in line with competitors by adding the long-requested ability to edit messages instead of having to delete and re-send them.
The new DM editing feature enables iOS users to revise their sent messages, offering greater flexibility and control over communications within the app. Although simple, this feature has been missing from the platform for years, and was second only to the requests to be able to edit individual tweets in the same way.
Unfortunately, X’s messaging system still needs to make progress. Currently, encryption for direct messages is available only for verified users, and Musk himself has acknowledged that the existing system is cumbersome – Musk had previously promised default encryption for all DMs, a feature still not fully implemented.
The rollout of DM editing is part of a broader series of incremental updates at X. Recent improvements include enhancements to the Grok AI chatbot, which now features image creation capabilities, and ongoing efforts to integrate payment options and a redesigned user interface.
X’s progress has been hampered by substantial staffing reductions, various controversies both on and about the platform, and the very recent ban in Brazil. With competitors like BlueSky seeing a surge in user numbers, these updates could be key to X maintaining its position as one of the top social media sites in the world.
