Survey Reveals How Americans Feel About Potential TikTok Ban

A recent survey sheds light on how different demographics of Americans feel about a potential nationwide TikTok ban. Amid ongoing debates and legislative scrutiny, the survey by HostingAdvice.com offers timely insights on American public sentiment regarding this issue.

HostingAdvice.com surveyed over 3,200 people, including a random sample from each state and 1,000 TikTok users, to gauge their usage habits and opinions on the potential ban.

Notably, the survey finds that while the TikTok ban appears bipartisan, states’ opinions often align with political affiliations. In fact, it finds that most states supporting the ban are historically blue, whereas those opposing it are traditionally red.

Moreover, 36% of TikTok users are concerned about Chinese government access to their data, a concern shared by 46% of Republicans and 34% of Democrats.

Other key findings include:

  • 51% of Americans oppose a TikTok ban, 32% support it, and 17% remain neutral.
  • The average Gen Z TikTok user would regain over 2 hours daily if the app were banned.
  • 1 in 10 TikTok users believe a ban would positively impact their lives.
  • More than 13% of Gen Z TikTok users disagree with the statement, “I have control over how much I use TikTok. I could quit tomorrow if I wanted to.”

Additionally, the survey shares some more state-level insights, including the following findings:

  • Only five states show more support than opposition to a TikTok ban: Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, Missouri, and Oregon.
  • Washington is the most divisive state, with 39% supporting and 50% opposing the ban.
  • The American South, including states like Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia, predominantly opposes the ban.

There’s a stark difference in how the U.S. government and U.S. TikTok users view the platform’s threat to Americans, said Joe Warnimont, a technology expert at HostingAdvice.

Some TikTok users may prioritize freedom of choice over concerns about data security and governmental regulation”, added Warnimont.
