Voodoo Acquires BeReal for €500M, Eyes Future Growth
BeReal, the social app for spontaneously sharing unfiltered photos, has been acquired by mobile apps and games company Voodoo for €500 million.
Launched in 2019, BeReal is known for its daily push notification prompting users to post real-time photos within a two-minute window. The platform now has over 40 million active users. Its emphasis on genuine interactions, with no likes and followers, contributed to its early success and loyal user base.
However, BeReal has struggled to sustain growth and with funding dwindling, the app has been actively seeking a buyer. Voodoo’s acquisition comes at a critical moment, offering the resources and expertise needed to revive BeReal.
“BeReal achieved incredible user loyalty and growth, showing there is a universal need to share real, unfiltered experiences with close friends,” said Alexandre Yazdi, Voodoo’s co-founder and CEO.
“We are very excited to bring our teams together and leverage Voodoo’s know-how and differentiated technologies to scale BeReal into the iconic social network for authenticity”, added Yazdi on X.
Under this new ownership, Aymeric Roffé, CEO of Voodoo’s social app Wizz, will take the helm as BeReal’s new CEO. Voodoo plans to harness its extensive experience in mobile product development and growth strategies to enhance BeReal’s feature set and accelerate user acquisition through organic and paid marketing.
With Voodoo’s support, BeReal aims to uphold its core mission of fostering authentic connections while expanding its reach in key markets like the United States, Japan, and France. Integrating Voodoo’s growth technologies promises to enhance BeReal’s user engagement and solidify its market presence.
