Tumblr Owner Automattic Acquires Beeper App
Automattic has confirmed its acquisition of Beeper, an app which integrates multiple messaging apps into one platform, for $125 million.
The company counts WordPress.com and Tumblr among its portfolio. Its acquisition of Beeper aligns with its long-term strategy to expand into the messaging space.
With this strategic move, the company takes another step towards creating a more open, interconnected messaging ecosystem.
Its CEO Matt Mullenweg commented that “private, free, encrypted, open-source communication is a fundamental human right”.
Beeper’s mission is to offer users a seamless communication experience across platforms. It brings various messaging services into a single inbox.
Its Beeper Mini solution for Android users to access iMessages sparked a clash with Apple in recent months.
The app previously raised $16 million in outside funding, including $8 million from a Series A round. While necessary due to high running costs, Beeper’s CEO Eric Migicovsky emphasizes that this move isn’t a compromise, as they continue to work towards their vision of a people-centric messaging system.
Beeper is also opening up to all users, so you no longer have to join a waitlist. Learn more about Beeper by visiting its website here.
