Azar – Video Chat & Livestream App Eyes Global Expansion

Social video chat and livestreaming app, Azar, is gaining ground with users globally and has announced upcoming updates and marketing plans for the rest of this year to build on its momentum.

The app allows users to video chat, start livestreams and communicate with one another without country, culture or language restrictions.

It matches users to another person to video chat with based on preferences like gender and location, so they can discover new people to form friendships or love connections with.

The Korean start-up is already popular in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. According to HyperConnect, the company behind Azar, it’s matched 147 billion people and been downloaded more than 500 million times since its 2013 launch.

It’s seen positive growth in downloads in Europe in Q3 of last year, as per this press release, by 60% or more in the UK and the Netherlands compared to the same period in the previous year – and at a rate of 31% in the region. In France and Germany, downloads increased by close to 50% in the same period.

Azar, meaning ‘chance’ or ‘coincidence’ in Spanish, plans to build on this popularity, starting with a newly introduced one-on-one video chat feature for streamers.

This means anyone starting a livestream on ‘Azar Live’, the app’s real-time video broadcasting feature, can now invite other users who are currently connected to participate in their broadcast.

Hosts can customize their guest participation mode before going live, and video chat users can agree or decline to participate in livestreams, if invited by a host. Hosts are also automatically recommended new guests to invite if a participating one leaves their broadcast.

Livestream hosts and video chat users can view the chats of viewers participating in a broadcast, and chat to multiple users at the same time, while also having the option of the 1:1 video chat function – a function often absent from other livestreaming platforms.

Azar rolled out a new logo and look in 2023, as seen in this 20-second clip:

“Azar is witnessing explosive traction with an influx of new users from various European countries, and we are capitalizing on this momentum with various initiatives in the region,” shared the VP and Head of Azar at Hyperconnect.

It’s already successfully generated user interest through events – mainly in Europe and the UK – including: operating a music festival booth, collaborating on IRL events with local singers and influencers, and operating pop-up stores in university areas.

It looks like Azar plans on making more marketing and localization moves to grow their user base in the months ahead.
