Hunch Targets US Market, Sets Its Sights On Global Expansion

Hunch, a polls-based social networking app from India – where it’s already acquired more than a million users – eyes a global expansion and is zeroing in on the U.S. market as a first step.

The pseudonymous social discovery app allows users to post polls on questions and topics they’re interested in, and receive immediate responses from other anonymous users.

After a visual rebrand last month, Hunch’s co-founder and CEO, Ish Goel, has shared its plans for expansion into the U.S. market and globally.

The platform positions itself as an alternative to mainstream social media by creating a more participatory experience for its Gen Z target user base.

While traditional social platforms tend to put users in a more passive role, consuming or interacting mostly with content they are shown via algorithms, poll-based apps attract users who seek to voice their opinions without fear of judgement and also gain insights from their peers.

Unlike with ‘likes’, polls also offer more value in terms of better understanding a community’s opinions.

“We designed Hunch for today’s youth who have strong opinions. It is a space that doesn’t kill their curiosity, lets them be themselves, and helps them build authentic connections rooted rooted in genuine interests rather than societal norms or popularity”, shared Goel.

Users can connect with each other through the comments on the user-generated polls, or the app’s chat feature called ‘Goss’ where conversations disappear within 24 hours.

Similarly to Reddit, users are assigned a randomly generated username when they sign up, which can be changed later. While some choose to reveal their real names, approximately 70-80% of users prefer to remain anonymous, as per Goel.
