New Insights From Diem’s The State Of Search 2023 Report
Social search engine Diem’s The State Of Search 2023 report shares new insights into how women and girls turn to the internet to find community knowledge for personal or ‘taboo’ questions.
It’s based on data from over 300,000 user interactions in the Diem platform and the results of an online survey with hundreds of female participants globally, combined with expert analysis.
The report reveals only 5% of women and girls state they are satisfied “all of the time” when searching for answers to their personal questions online.
It points to the impact of the gender information gap online, with research showing women and men use different approaches to retrieve information.
Women employ a more structured approach, using specific key terms and longer queries for focused searching.
Algorithm male-skewed bias, gendered language and data bias all make inclusive information harder to access for women.
The report finds they turn to “social” experiences to fill those knowledge gaps with stories from other women and girls, seeking crowdsourced knowledge online to validate their own experiences.
Women’s online behaviour skews more communal; 95% of respondents say other people’s experiences are highly important when searching for answers to personal questions.
Key topics searched for by the demographic are: health and body, finance, sex, and romantic relationships. For each one, respondents rated knowledge from the internet or from their friends and personal network as more important to them than their own.
Career and friendships are also highly searched-for topics.
Results reveal a shift in consumer preferences towards vertical, “niche” communities and away from monolithic platforms with algorithms unfit for their search needs.
Diem’s social search engine uses an AI model trained through a community-centric and feminine lens, in order to meet women’s informational needs online.
